Rutilated Quartz

March 17, 2021

You don’t need to be a ‘jewellery person’ to admire and appreciate the beauty of Rutilated Quartz. This gem is a fine specimen of nature’s powerful abilities and always manages to astonish even the most jaded eyes. Known for its ability to repel negative energies, this stone is also believed to bring wealth and abundance. Are you sold yet?

An amazing mineral in itself, Rutile is the most common crystal form of titanium oxide (TiO2) and has one of the highest refractive indices of any known mineral (2.91). Generally, the higher the RI the more brilliance a stone will have when cut as the light passing through the stone is dispersed into a wider span of spectral colours (like colourful sparkle of Diamond).

Rutile crystalises in prisms and commonly as twins in a variety of formations. Within Quartz, Rutile normally forms as either parallel growth, a random mess of needles and occasionally spraying off a Hematite platelet inclusion in three directions appearing as a 6-pointed star. These are particular sought after by collectors as they are simply spectacular!

In other cases, Rutile is a microscopic inclusion and responsible for asterisms in stones such as ‘Star Sapphires’. Fine needles of Rutile, also named ‘silk’, arranged at 120 degrees to one another form a 3-rayed star. Light reflects off the rutile beneath the surface and the light reflected back displays that of 3-rayed (6-pointed) star.

Quartz (SiO2) forms 12% of the Earth’s crust and is one of the most common minerals on our planet. Rutilated Quartz is one of the rarer types of included Quartz and can be found in, but not limited to, Australia, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, which is where the majority of beautiful and varying Quartz pieces that feature in our Quartz crystal jewellery collection is predominately sourced.

The Quartz component is generally clear to milky rock crystal or various shades of Smokey Quartz. The Rutile crystals are typically a golden colour but can also be reddish, greenish, silver, grey or black. The fine, delicate Rutile needles have been referred to as ‘angel’s hair’ or ‘the hair of Venus’.

Bunny Bedi, owner and designer at Made in Earth, has always said this stone was one of his weaknesses. Here is he tells us why. “Each piece varies in colour, concentration and formation so you will certainly be the owner of a truly unique piece of jewellery when you own any of our Rutilated Quartz rings, pendants or earrings. This is the approach I take when buying gemstones, rather than just buying from one supplier, I find myself buying from multiple suppliers because each batch is so unique. It’s impossible to choose only one!”

Admired from afar for its breathtaking sparkle and near for its wondrous inclusions, Rutilated Quartz will dazzle you. Unique in every sense of the word, this gemstone is prized for being inconsistent and unusual but reliably gorgeous.
